Basketball this morning

Alexandra High School visits St Charles

THE ST CHARLES COLLEGE SAINTS hosted Alexandra High School to a full round of basketball fixtures this morning on the College's campus. With the cricket cancelled owing to the heavy rain which fell most of yesterday and last night, there was a large crowd of Saints' supporters in the Indoor Centre for the games held there. The outdoor courts were also in use this morning.

It was a very close set of games, with the second team drawing 42-42 at full-time. All present agreed to a further five minutes to try to break the tie -- which St Charles College did to come away with a two-basket win. The visitors led comfortably in the first quarter of the main game which started at 10:30. The second and third quarters saw that lead whittled away so the final quarter was anyone's match. Tense it was as gradually the Saints built up a lead and won by two baskets. Thanks Alex for the visit - well played to all the basketballers.

Hot humid conditions

in Pietermaritzburg

ST CHARLES COLLEGE HOSTED Merchiston Preparatory School and Michaelhouse at Harwin Road today. The First XI was scheduled to play at Balgowan, so the Second XI did battle on the St Charles College oval. A huge amount of rain fell on the Harwin Road campus yesterday afternoon, the moisture from which made the wickets unpredicatable (more so than usual) and the air thick with humidity. As a consequence the games on the Harwin Fields started late with the Junior First XI game against Merchiston beginning only at 12:30pm and destined to be a Twenty20 game (originally a 50-over match), while the U15A game was shortened from a declaration match to a 35-over-a-side affair. It was great to have our mates from Michaelhouse and Merchiston to visit today. Thanks Merchie Mudrats and Michaelhouse for the games and well played to all. The First XI scorecard can be downloaded here - it's an .xls file.

Mr Dave Karlsen sent the following match report to the web site - on the First XI match at Michaelhouse.

"St Charles College vs Michaelhouse
Saturday 23 January 2010
Venue: Michaelhouse
Team: Gareth Dukes (Capt), Gregory Ford, Grant Stone, Mzamo Cele, Dean Robinson, Matthew Ford, Paul Vincent, Dexter Hobbs, Ryan Sclanders, Keagan Davids, Vaughn Moses

A sporting declaration and then disaster as three injuries play a integral role in the match at Michaelhouse. In a game that stated late because of wet outfield conditions an exciting day was had by all. As with the corresponding game in 2009 bad weather had the final say.
Match report
Having been put in to bat by their hosts St Charles started cautiously in bowler-friendly conditions. The loss of the three top order stalwarts of Ford, Robinson and Vincent saw the signs of things to come as new boys Dexter Hobbs and Ryan Sclanders fashioning a partnership of 78 to lay a platform for the lower order to set Michaelhouse a target. Sclanders was the rock around which the St Charles batsmen built an impressive 222 for 6 declared. In the end the young debutante finished with 88 perishing in the hunt for quick runs. Grant Stone continued his fantastic season with another belligerent 57 not out in 45 balls.
It was a good declaration giving Michaelhouse a chance to reach the total if they were to take up the challenge; great credit to their batsmen, particularly Davson who blasted a 102 in the run chase.
Six overs into the innings disaster struck as first Matthew Ford pulled up lame, then Skipper Gareth Dukes injured himself leaving the St Charles lads without their two front-line bowlers. Just to turn the situation in to a real challenge debutante fast bowler, Keagan Davids, damaged an inter costal muscle while fielding on the boundary.
A sporting declaration now looked desperately like cricket's form of hari kiri! It took a supreme effort of guts and commitment to keep the St Charles team in the game. At the end of play mercifully brought to a close 10 minutes before the end of the day by a downpour, Michaelhouse were still 18 runs short of the target with 5 wickets down and the game marginally in the hosts' favour - although another wicket could have put the cat amongst the pigeons.

Format:
Declaration Cricket

St Charles College 222 for 6 declared
Ryan Sclanders 88, Grant Stone 57 not out
Hitchcock 3 for 52
Michaelhouse 205 for 5
Davson 102, Hulbert 45
Result: Rain stopped play: match drawn"
